CeramicSpeed has built its reputation around the idea that marginal gains don’t necessarily have to come from spectacular new components. Sometimes they are hidden inside the parts that most riders never think about. Bearings are perhaps the ultimate example. They sit quietly inside hubs, bottom brackets and pulley wheels, turning, loading and taking abuse every time we ride.

Now the Danish company has introduced its new ALPHA Wheel Bearings, a new generation designed around the same low-friction philosophy but with a greater emphasis on durability and protection.

CeramicSpeed calls them “The Heart of It All”, and the name is more than marketing. The company has redesigned the bearing races and seals rather than simply updating the ceramic balls inside. The result is a bearing architecture built around Grade 3 silicon nitride ceramic balls, hardened stainless-steel races and newly developed light-contact seals.

Less friction, more protection

The most significant change is the move to a single hardened stainless-steel race material across the ALPHA Wheel Bearing range. CeramicSpeed says the material provides increased corrosion protection and has been validated through more than one million test kilometres in laboratory and field testing.

The other major change is the seal. Rather than treating protection and low friction as opposing priorities, CeramicSpeed has developed its own light-contact design, claiming a 500% increase in bearing protection while retaining the low-friction characteristics of its previous architecture. The rear of each seal is also covered with stainless steel for additional protection.

The development process also followed the company’s familiar route through professional racing. Prototype ALPHA bearings were tested by CeramicSpeed’s WorldTour partners at Soudal Quick-Step alongside its professional gravel athletes, with the bearings exposed to different racing conditions before the final design was settled.

And, perhaps most significantly for a component designed to spend its life hidden inside a hub, CeramicSpeed is backing the ALPHA bearings with a lifetime warranty.

ALPHA is becoming a bigger family

The new bearings arrive as CeramicSpeed continues to expand and rethink the products surrounding its core bearing technology. The most recent example is the revamped ALPHA Pulley Wheels, which take the same idea into the rear derailleur. Unlike the company’s oversized pulley wheel systems, the new ALPHA Pulley Wheels retain the standard dimensions of an OEM pulley, making them a straightforward replacement rather than a complete drivetrain modification.

Taken together, the recent launches suggest that CeramicSpeed is broadening what its familiar ceramic-bearing philosophy can mean, striving to improve the bicycle’s least visible components.
