Son los directores de lo que es hoy en d\u00eda uno de los eventos gravel m\u00e1s atractivos mundialmente. El entorno es dif\u00edcil de superar, y adem\u00e1s se nota que internamente est\u00e1 muy bien organizado. Cuidan como ning\u00fan otro evento tanto a los participantes -aunque una vez que comenz\u00f3 la carrera todos lo hicieron en autosuficiencia- como a la audiencia que la sigue desde todas partes del mundo, que crece a\u00f1o a a\u00f1o. Todos, incluidos los novatos, aprendieron la lecci\u00f3n, y se notaba que iban bien preparados con guantes de l\u00e1tex y todo tipo de ropa impermeable. Hac\u00eda fr\u00edo, pero todo era relativo tras saber que cinco meses antes se hab\u00eda registrado un r\u00e9cord de -21,9\u00b0C en la vecina Balmaceda.<\/p>\n<p>El primer control estaba a 198 kil\u00f3metros y el pelot\u00f3n se fue separando r\u00e1pidamente. Eran conscientes de que iba a ser un largo trecho, pero contaban con m\u00e1s de cinco d\u00edas, hasta el 29 de noviembre a las 16:00, para completar la ruta. El terreno era estupendo y la superficie perfecta para gravel, con caminos anchos y un terreno ondulado constante. Ven\u00edan de pasar un duro tramo de viento en contra en una zona extremadamente expuesta y a gran altura. Tras el Checkpoint 1, se dirigieron al Valle de la Luna, un tramo igualmente remoto con un paisaje particular que nos hizo parar varias veces con el coche para apreciar lo que ten\u00edamos a nuestro alrededor. En temporada alta hay demasiados veh\u00edculos cubriendo partes o la totalidad del itinerario de 1.240 kil\u00f3metros, pero Across Andes se desarrolla justo antes del comienzo del verano en el hemisferio sur. La Carretera Austral ten\u00eda sus propios puntos destacados, siendo el Parque Nacional Queulat un buen ejemplo, y no todo estaba asfaltado.<\/p>\n<p>Pasamos la noche en Puyuhuapi, un pueblo de pescadores ubicado en el camino a La Junta. Hab\u00edamos superado a todos los corredores, pero sab\u00edamos que a la ma\u00f1ana siguiente, al despertar, revisar\u00edamos el tracker y ver\u00edamos que muchos de ellos hab\u00edan seguido pedaleando durante la noche. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tagleandres\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Andr\u00e9s Taigle<\/a> ya estaba en cabeza y en camino a su segunda victoria consecutiva en Across Andes.<\/p>\n<p>A las 5:00 un corredor toc\u00f3 a la puerta de la caba\u00f1a contigua a la nuestra, y los lugare\u00f1os lo recibieron con los brazos abiertos y le ofrecieron comida adem\u00e1s de una cama calentita donde descansar antes de reanudar su carrera. Dejamos dormir al ecuatoriano Gabriel Cazares, de 20 a\u00f1os, y nos subimos al auto para seguir a los ciclistas que se acercaban al Checkpoint 2, a 468 km de la ruta. El sistema de seguimiento detectar\u00eda que llegaron al cruce del r\u00edo Ra\u00fal Mar\u00edn Balmaceda y tendr\u00edan que volver siguiendo su propio camino de regreso a La Junta, a 62 kil\u00f3metros de distancia. Ya sea que llegaran al pueblo desde la Carretera Austral o desde cualquiera de los puntos de control restantes, los ciclistas tomaron los restaurantes locales y llenaron las limitadas plazas de alojamiento disponibles. Los enchufes y estufas eran altamente codiciados, ya que todos los participantes necesitaban cargar sus dispositivos electr\u00f3nicos y secar su ropa. Se vistieron con capas convencionales -y no tan convencionales- para enfrentar el fr\u00edo y la lluvia y continuaron contando los kil\u00f3metros hasta la siguiente meta, ya fuera la oficial o un objetivo establecido internamente.<\/p>\n<p>Laguna Verde estaba a 75 km al este de La Junta, un largo camino para las piernas ya fatigadas de los participantes. Gran parte del desnivel positivo -un total de 14.800 para toda la ruta- se conten\u00eda all\u00ed, por lo que el gimnasio al final del segmento monta\u00f1oso no solo era el lugar donde obtener el pen\u00faltimo sello, sino tambi\u00e9n el lugar para dormir para muchos ciclistas que no ten\u00edan la suficiente confianza para regresar a La Junta de una tirada.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rawcyclingmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/rDSCF9629.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23635\" src=\"https:\/\/rawcyclingmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/rDSCF9629.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rawcyclingmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/rDSCF9629.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/rawcyclingmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/rDSCF9629-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rawcyclingmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/rDSCF9629-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rawcyclingmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/rDSCF9629-1536x1024.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Regresamos a Puyuhuapi para pasar la noche, donde hab\u00eda corredores que a\u00fan deb\u00edan llegar por primera vez a La Junta. Parec\u00edan tener la moral alta, pero encontrarse con corredores que ya estaban regresando a Coyhaique debi\u00f3 ser desalentador.<\/p>\n<h3>Momentos finales cubriendo el evento<\/h3>\n<p>Cubrir un evento de bikepacking en su tercer d\u00eda requiere una planificaci\u00f3n extra. Puedes estar esperando en un buen lugar durante horas y no pasar\u00e1 ning\u00fan corredor, y hay que tener en cuenta que la conexi\u00f3n a internet en la Patagonia se limita a los pocos pueblos que uno puede encontrar en el camino o sus alrededores.<\/p>\n<p>Fue imposible llegar a tiempo para ver a Andr\u00e9s Taigle cruzar la meta, ya que fue absurdamente r\u00e1pido y lleg\u00f3 a Coyhaique en 1 d\u00eda, 23 horas y 34 minutos. Tambi\u00e9n vale la pena destacar las actuaciones de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/auriemmacristian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cristian Auriemma<\/a> y Marcin Barwisnki, que completaron el podio. De camino a Coyhaique vimos a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/watt_wagon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cynthia Carson<\/a>, que en ese momento era la segunda en el ranking femenino, subir con dificultad la exigente Cuesta Queulat. Probablemente no se dio cuenta de que estaba rodando entre nalcas, plantas gigantes nativas del sur de Chile. Sin embargo, pasamos suficiente tiempo para comprobar lo genial que es participar en un evento de bikepacking. Los participantes se divirtieron mucho, a pesar de los obst\u00e1culos que se encontraron en el camino. El equipo de media se divirti\u00f3 mucho, a pesar de pasar incontables horas metidos en el coche y su falta de sue\u00f1o. Pudimos ver de primera mano el impacto positivo del evento en la econom\u00eda local. Los ciclistas hambrientos gastan mucho dinero en comida, y muchos de ellos ya llevaban una semana en la regi\u00f3n antes del evento o iban a extender su estancia una vez que cruzaran la l\u00ednea de meta.
